Hi there old friends and classmates. What an adventure--Berkeley, then law school at UCLA, years of practice and raising children in LA with business finally sending me up to Seattle. If you see this and are inclined to contact me, email is dcloselaw@aol.com. One thing is for sure, I'll always be an Islander from the best year the school ever had! Best to all, Doug

Well this it  "the big one"  Five oh baby! High school was the beginning of the beggining. all the all the other reunions were the beginning of the end.. The Big Five OH!.. Well, I hate to say it.... but it's kind of the the end of end.  Very seldom in our lives do we get to recognize, our last chance.... It would be a shame to miss it. I have dicoverred, my own irony...It's seems being semi-retired... I put off a lot today, because, I think, I can do it tomorrow...but life doesn't work that way. So my hope is about this reunion and about life in general.... if you can... show up.

June 10, 2013 Dear Members of the Coronado High School Class of 1968, Many thanks for inviting me to your reunion on Saturday, July 6.  I am sorry that I will be unable to join you as I am on oxygen 24 hours a day and find it difficult to attend social functions. We have had 45 years since you graduated, 45 years of many experiences that you will enjoy sharing with your classmates.  Best wishes for the next five years when you will gather again for your 50th reunion. I recently found out that English teacher Roy Burgh and guidance counselor Paul Shaler both graduated from Coronado High!

I remember Mr. Burgh saying to me "William, What nice long legs you have!"

I still recall his poem in Canvas:

Thank God for the Pope
Thank God for the pill
And thank God for free will

If anyone is interested in Coronado High from 1940-50, I just wrote an article in Downtown News San Diego about Esther Painter Hagstrom who was the art teacher at Coronado from 1939-1952 (before Mr Luedtke). There is currently an art show of her work and some of her students at the Coronado library, thanks to the donation of her works by her granddaughter Suzie Hagstrom.

I would also like to take a moment to remember my good friend Brian Hackett.

I have so many great meomories with our music days playing in folk groups during and after CHS.  Brian could play just about anything  that he could get his hands on.  I know that my parents sort of adopted him into our family supporting his creative talents when perhaps others close to him did not understand.

Before I went on to SDSU Brian was also in many of my art classes at Southwestern at a time when Southwestern had one of the very best art departments in the country with nationally known art teachers.  Brian rocked!  His work in some of the student shows was amazing.

Brian's creative sprit and talent never got a chance to become what it could have been which is unfortunate as was his short time here.

Brian's jounney was not an easy ride but I will always remember his kind spirit.

Well Hello to classmates from 1968. I have traveled many paths, some less traveled in these past 44 years.

Friends say you must reunite with your past to understand your present.

So in such a spirit I send out this message.

Not many names are remembered but who can forget the humor of John Little. All remember the Class president, but who recalls the runner-up. Swim team was an important part of my senior year but what ever happend to the coach?

It has been many years since I last visited Coronado. If there is to be a 45th event please let me know.

After having missed the last few reunions it seems hard to jump back in but heck, here goes. Thanks to Rick Beede, I got inspired to check out the \'68 site. He connected with me sending birthday greetings (thanks for thinking of the ole\' gal!). I would like to hear of a 2013 reunion and hopefully could make it this time. I would imagine some things have changed yet stayed the same. Bob Yount and I coincidentally live on the same Puget Sound island and haven\'t made a connection. What\'s that about? Happy trails to all until we meet again!

Last October our good friend Bob "Lights" Lahodney passed away...
I had known Bob since we were together in third grade.  Bob was one of the guys you knew was just a leader in our grade, and proved it year after year.  When were at Crown Elementary together, it was a new school.  Our class was to be the first sixth grade that had gone from first to sixth at the school.  I remember when we were in fifth grade several of us were constsntly in front of Mr. Presley and getting sent for punishment.  At the time punishment was a cricket paddle and a soccer ball.  The vice principle would have us bend over and grag ankles; then wack the socker ball into our rears with his bat.  Sometimes it would leave the pattern of the ball for days.
Bob and I had complained that there was no student council and that we had no input in the school.  The following year Crown, through our nagging allowed the first student election with one rule.  The President and vice presitend had to be a boy and a girl.
After elections Bob was elected president, a girl named Carol was VP. and I was secretary.  As you know from high school Bob was voted President every year there-after.  Even when suspended to the "Rat Cellar" Bob was elected President...
So, if you didn\'t know Bob well, this was the rest of the story you did know.
For "lights" Lahodney; the lights are still on...

Kudos to all of the members of the reunion committee for all the hard work they did to make this event the best ever.  A special thanks to the Fallettas for their hospitality over the weekend and putting me up and allowing me to sample from their wine selection.  The night in their kitchen after the event was memorable too with just a few of us catching up.  Looking forward to seeing Janet, Pam, Carol in the near future.  I am not so sure the tiki will receive a warm welcome but I have it on my patio for the moment.  Thanks for the e-mail Deb--maybe you and Greg will get down our way or us up to Santa Barbara.  Thanks to all of you!

I'm still reeling from the feelings, Folks.  Gotta give me some time to digest that glorious summer week in Coronado.  From Laura and I, deep appreciation and thanks.
I have amended my Classmates entry with our personal data and open invitations to you all for some future Northwest Gettaway.
As mentioned in it as well, Laura's photo journal of the Reunion, picnic and, unless I can convince her otherwise, the Rough-Water / Alumni Water-polo extravaganzas are to follow.  Regarding these latter two, the most favorable thing I have to say is that the Class of 1968 definitely WAS represented.

      Stay in touch??

For John, Janet, Pam and the whole committee; thanks you did a great job.  There just wasn't enough time to get together with everyone.  So a 45th sounds good to me.
Gwyn, yes I do remember giving you your first motorcycle ride.  You held on so tight I knew you were scared.  But maybe just cause you didn't have shoes.
Sue Hacker, It was great to see you again.  Say hi to your uncle Jack for me.
Holly, you look so happy.  Stay that way..
Dean, you actually look better now than in High School.  I guess your just not that high anymore.
Big John Mcleod, as you said only one of 305 people arrested at the keg party at the house 4 of were renting on "A".  I saw several others at the reunion that I think were also arrested that night.  Does anyone still have the Union Tribune from then?
Thanks everyone, our class really was the best..

It so hard sometimes not to go though life being cynical, absolving yourself of blame, and losing your own happiness responsibility.  Poems, remind me, of that which I already know, but is so easily forgotten. I wrote this to remind me....

Tides of love await you, to be found
An open heart need not search, while love is all around

Like waves upon the shore, pools that ebb and flow
Coming ever closer as you stand there, only to pull away and go

Not knowing the ebb of the tide, each wave inching away
Or flowing to greet your toes, where planted in sand, they stay

Do you anxiously run to meet it?Plunging feet first
Or wait to have it touch you,
Savoring the thirst.

Is there fear it will reach you? and wash away the sand
Or too cold for your touch, so you test it, with your hand.

Oh! to test the waters, for a temperature just right
Not committing to let it touch you, but knowing that it might.

Maybe you take no chances and a step back away
Not wanting to touch the sea, not wanting to feel that way

Close your eyes and smell the ocean, feel the breeze in your hair
Hear the sea gulls speak their rhythm, sense the magic coming near
Your heart can see the hope,
the horizon upon the ocean
It feels the tides of love, all around,
set in motion.

A huge thanks to our reunion committee for a wonderful reunion Sat. night.  The night just wasn't long enough to really take in all your work with all the details, and talk to all the people.  But, thanks again for everything each of you did in making the night such a memorable event.  I have to do some talking in order to keep my "Tiki".
Great gifts, great food, great decor, great fun, great planning.  Now, take a breath!!!  I hope each of you also enjoyed the night.  Have a wonderful summer.  I think I heard the next will be the 45th.  I'll will look forward to it too.

It's the morning after (the Sat Nite Reunion), thanks for the memories and reconnections.  Thanks to Jane Turnipseed for keeping me in touch during your senior year when I was at prep school in Deerfield, MA. I therefore had no entry in the '68 yearbook, which I regret ... not my biggest regret, I regret to say.  Cheryl Winslow should have been feted as Valedectorian, if for no other reason than to get Jerry Fledderjohn's goat.  She also was very gracious and kind to me and to my fiancee Kathryn Andrews, who had a remarkably good time, due to the friendliness of Jonde Northcutt, Robin Keehn, Gwen O'Toole, Pam Hawkins, Loc Vetter, Tom Lehman, Jerry F, Rick Beede, Ron & Kathy Clark, Cindy Pennick, Joe Ingalls (I know, hard to believe), Mayson Hwa, Betsy Lear, Curt Oliver, John and Diana Little, Marilyn Stockdale, Mimi, and several other noteables that my failing memory (I know there is some name for that) will not bring up right now.

My mind was racing after the event last night, I couldn't believe how everyone was the same, even though everything has changed!
My poetic sense took over, thoughts racing that needed to put down in writing.

We are but dawning stars
Shining brightly in the morn
Fading behind the sun and clouds
Awaiting a new day reborn

The morning star shines brightly
before the days awakens
Soon weathered by sun, hidden by clouds
A hopeful light forsaken

A fight to keep itself burning
not knowing how to win
To shine brightly as it once did
Before the days begin

I see the faces weathered
Oh!, how could it be?
When seeing eyes that shine so brightly
Is my reality

The mind's eye tells the truth
Seeing yourself as you were
Don't be fooled by sun and clouds
That YOU were never there

The morning star's, the constant
Everything changes, Everyone the same
No up and downs can eliminate YOU
In life's chute's and ladder's game

Behind the eyes, I see life's wonder
A constant shining star
No dimming light will ever change
You were, who you are

We will be walking aimlessly up and down Orange Ave., on the Fourth looking for faces we don't recognize anymore.  It is soooo hard to believe that it has been 40 years!

I can actually still feed myself but not for long I'll bet.

I recently ran into Coach Ron Nixon and he still looks the same, unreal!

See you all Saturday.

Single mom and raised 7 children and 1 grand baby. I love life every minute, and probably will still be playing with power rangers when they take me to the Villa across from the Coro. Hosp. Our memories of bygone days
Days in sun, and those that rain
Some so clear, others but a haze
where do they go?
after our last refrain

They fertilize our life
so that we may grow
they're the strength of our roots
that our flowers show

Out of the haze an island appears
No street lights and a ferry to cross.
Like yesterday, after all the years
where time has gone, never lost

Sandy beaches, and rocks in our head
Planes overhead and carriers in slip
A grand hotel, for us, no bed
and an school to learn friendship

A green wave, colors never outdated
An orange avenue, that's a yellow brick road
Everyday a blue sky, rarely appreciated
A Free market, a bakery, to lessen the load

Submarine races, on the beach
Or the San Diego skyline sight
Down the strand, was quite a reach
My favorite was the golf course at night

Surfers finding their way to the shore
North beach the happening place
Forget about the curriculum core
No classes, for surfer, such a waste

Bless their hearts
they tried their best
to teach us well
and pass the test

Burge, Adair, and Miss Mench
Wells, Adaskin, and Mr Miller
English was never for me a cinch
And calculus was a killer

Satterlee, Durand and Mr. Green
No one had yet invented cell phones
Physical education wasn't so keen
but history tells of a Mr. Jones

Our life was like a Club Med
Tri-Hi, Tri M, Trilites,a nd  Tri S
Cheerleading, Junto, Sponsors, and Lettermen
Interact, Booster, Math, and Pegasus

At night we were put at Risk
The world was ours to take
Until late one night we did whisk
to Aunt Emma's for a pancake

Oh! how to get to Tijuana
finding a car without a lock
Being able to drink when you wanna
then burying the senior rock!

Forty years ago
Our last walk through hallowed halls
The foundation for a lifetime
for construction of the walls

Not baggage, but a small valise
carrying who you are
Keep it close, it will give peace
Look inside to find your star.

I have many fond memories of Sacred Heart and Coronado High. I will not be able to attend our reunion. I have really enjoyed  reading the reunion website. It is  fun to see what everyone has been doing over the years. It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years. I have been married for 36 years, David and I have six children. I worked for the Chula Vista School District for 21 years. I just retired last Wednesday. My goal was to work and pay for my kids to have an eight year catholic education and they did. Then it was for them to get a college degree,  which they did. Two also have their master degree, so now it is my time to relax. Take care.

Hmm, for those of you who escaped life on "the Rock," I'm collecting suggestions for an appropriate name for our local paradise.  Those of us who have returned (or never left!) have heard it referred to as:
Leave-it-to-Beaver-Land
Mayberry-by-the-Sea
Bore-a-Nado
Any more suggestions?  I couldn't WAIT to get out of here when I was 18, but then returned at 29 for all the same reasons - everybody knows everybody, you can't go to the store without seeing someone you know, and everybody tells your parents EVERYTHING!  What a difference when you are the parent!  Vote for your favorite, or send your suggestions!

Just learned that the man who was always one step above me (alphabetically) since 5th grade, my friend (and prompter of me to pull a fire alarm my senior year), Drew Lennon, may be unable to attend the reunion because of an overdue library book. It was originally due back March 19, 1968 and the overdue charges are now a little of $5800.00. The FBI has become invovled in the case. We need to come to the aid of this former Crawford Plumber little league player and raise the money so he won't be banned from the Crown City!  What say ye?

Just got an e-mail from Karen O'Connor asking, "This is a silly question but what is the attire for the reunion? I hope not old prom dresses or the likes."
I say, ABSOLUTELY!  All of you who still have a prom dress, and can fit in it, WEAR IT!  I double-dog dare you!  Looks to me from the old reunions we usually do Southern Calif casual - Randy considers a Hawaiian shirt dressed up, and the girls always look fabulous.  See you all there!

Just wanted to thank to everyone who has e-mailed me to say "hello" since I won't be able to make the reunion. It has been GREAT getting caught up! SUSAN CONCANNON...I've tried numerous times to reply but it keeps getting sent back! Wanted you to know because I'd love to keep in touch. Maybe you can check and see what's up. Oh, the joys of technology! The "Big Event" is almost here! (Remember the "Big Kahoona" from, wasn't it KGB radio station or something like that?) And to whoever posted the 4th of July Bike Ride picture, YES, I do remember those! Boy, were they fun! (Of course, didn't participate until after graduation. :>) Another great memory of summers in Coronado. Have a blast, everyone! Everyone have a great time.

This is a message from one of our old teachers, Joan Adaskin, upon receiving her invitation: I cannot remember if I told you I had a stroke on Jan. 23, 2008 and my family brought me to Boston for rehab. I will live in the Boston area and sell my condo in SD; therefore I cannot make the reunion. Joan Adaskin

I won't be able to make it to the reunion, but for all of you who are in the Med this summer (Rick Beede, Gary Winstead and the crazy readhead...doesn't she have a name?) or who have promised themselves a trip to Greece someday(Mayson), I am on the island of Mykonos. My shop is BAG on Mitropoleos Street. There are no street signs or numbers in this maze of tiny alleys , but it is on the " main " street. Jill found me a few years back. We are open 7 days a week, all day long, during the summer. Drop in to say hello and for any information on the best places to dine , wine and swim!

So...can i bring my yearbook and will anyone sign it! :-)

Hi everyone,
It is really fun reading all the entries.  I was hoping to see more names on the list of attendees.  If you know Tom Darcy's email - get on him.  On second thought, here it is so we can all get on him.
tdarc@aol.com

He might kill me but...
If I don't show up at the reunion you'll know what happened.  We are supposed to being seeing him the weekend of June 14th.

I would do the same for Jim Haught, but I don't have his email.  Someone must know his whereabouts.  Get on Tom, he used to know how to get in touch with him.

By the way, my memory has become relative nonexistent it seems.  Did we have a 30th reunion?

To everyone who sent in comical quips, thanks.  I can't pull those off so I'm always glad to others.  Reunion Committee, thanks for all you are doing to get this up and going.  Have you remembered to dial up great weather?  Living in Camarillo, I'm used to pretty great weather all year long, without much of the heavy stuff in the air that always used to wreck whatever I had tried to do with my hair that morning.  Now, it's gray, so who cares - no one looks anymore.
Looking forward to seeing you.  Susan

Wow, when it rains, it pours!  Not only are we having our fabulous 40th on the 5th & 6th of July, but Sacred Heart School is having its 60th Jubilee on Sunday, July 6th also!  I counted 17 of us in the yearbook from Sacred Heart, and man, do we have stories to tell!  There is a celebration Mass at 11AM (no, Monsignor Purcell will not be there) and an Open House at the school from 12 - 2.  And YES, our 8th grade graduation picture is still on the wall!  Stop by to see how the old place looks - no nuns in sight these days, but the nightmares are free!  Then time for a few hours at the beach before our picnic at 4:30, before the Concert-in-the-Park, featuring the Corvettes (great oldies band).  See you there! - Gwyn

Hey everybody - Wow, after looking at the photo albums put together by our committee I am so moved! I want to personally (in front of everyone) thank Ledge for being my dear friend since 4th grade when I had just moved to Coronado from Alabama. I will never forget my first day at school, standing in front of the class telling my "Bio" and they all laughed at me because of my accent. I was a freak in my little suit, flats and a long braid w/bangs (as you can see in the first picture in the photo album). Ledge was so sweet on the playground and befriended me. He and his cousin Carolyn were the only friends I had for a long time. Her Dad was a great guy who would give us a dollar to go across the street to Freemans Grocery and buy a bag of penny candy - we thought we were in Heaven. Thankyou Ledge and Carolyn for being so kind.

Thought you all would enjoy reading a note we received from Harry Gallagher: What a flash back getting your email about the reunion. It's really hard to think 40 years ago we were so excited to get out of high school and start our lives. I will not be able to attend as I am retiring after 32 years work for the Social Adm. I retire July 1st and off to celebrate and then to a family reunion in North Carolina outer banks. It was interesting to go on and read about others........please fill in the class about me. Maybe we will run into each other some time. Looking forward to a new period in my life, to make my own schedule and get involved more in sports and hobbies. Take care and hope everyone that attends have a special time. If anyone wants to get in touch here's my email: harryjrcor@aol.com Harry

Rob Meyers mentioned the DOGS at Free Brothers Market!  Oh man, that brings back memories!  Randy Bent used to dazzle me by taking me to lunch every day at  Free Bros. Mkt. - hot dog & a coke for 35 cents.  Wow, was I impressed until I found out he was taking the money from his dad's change jar, and got grounded for a month!  By the way, we've been married almost 36 years, and I still watch my change jar!

Ok,  high School......not a big deal. So you got a 40 year reunion...who cares?

So many people with "other" plans, like forty years ago they said "I leavin and I ain't coming back" or the oops.. I forgot the reunion, I'm getting a hang nail removed that weekend! No big deal..I think God needs to slap 'em upside the head!
We're suppose to go out an find people for their 40th reunion..oh my why ain't they lookin for us? Don't worry we'll try and save them from themself.

Ok..for four years I had my hand up his ass...so I know that's where his head is....Let's talk Joe Delaurentis... he missed the 20 year reunion and lives in Coronado? are you shittin me? Any one see him around town tell him if he doesn't show. I'll grab him by the balls and show him how to play the real texas-hold-em!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you again! My wife of almost 20 years passed away 3 years ago leaving me to raise my 2 beautiful teenage daughters by myself. Approximately 18 months ago I met a beautiful lady on E-Harmony and we will be getting married on May 24 of this year. I've been a Special Ed School teacher for the last 27 years working with boys and girls who have learning disabilities. I plan to retire from teaching in 2 or 3 years. I presently live in the Temecula area not far from Southern California's largest wine growing area. I hope this letter finds you all in good health and spirits.

I wanted to thank Doug Kipperman for saving my ___! back in 1967. Mike Nienberg and Jay Brickley talked me into using my Ford Falcon to go to Tijuana one Friday night. Of course, I was 17 and my Dad told me if he ever caught me in Mexico...he would disown me. Ignoring that threat we drove to I.B....I got in the trunk...and Mike drove across the border...I was scared to death! We spent the next 4-5 hours partying and were about ready to go home when everyone wanted to hit one more bar. I was out of cash so decided to fill my beer bottle up with water and walk into the club and sip H2O. On the way to the bar one of the local cops saw the bottle hanging out of my coat...grabbed me by the arm...and started hauling me off to jail. Doug happened to be down in TJ the same night [certainly was a God thing]...saw the whole thing...went over to the cop [told him something in Spanish...glad he got an A in Spanish]...gave him some $$$ and the cop let me go. Needless to say I didn't wait for anyone and hauled butt to the car. Hey Doug...hope you can make it to the reunion...wanted to thank you in person! Jim

It is with great sadness and surprise that I inform you that fellow '68 classmate and my good, good friend Geno Horton, died on April 24th while snorkeling in the British Virgin Islands with friends. Geno had diabetes and apparently his blood sugar was too low. He passed out while in the water and drowned. I was fortunate enough to have visited with him about three months ago and we spent three days together fishing, eating and retelling stories from our youth. Geno and I became friends when we were in the 2nd grade. He was in my wedding. I can't tell you all the memories I have from growing up with Geno in Coronado. He worked as an electrician at a hydro-electric plant up in Big Creek, CA near Fresno. He worked there for about 38 years. He has 3 adult children, one of whom resides in San Diego. Geno loved the outdoors, watching sports, doing his job and being with his kids. He will be missed........
